ANNUAL POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP |

2008-2009 Results
Each year
Fence Dry! designates
Annual Point Champions based
on a formula that combines
fencer ranking with placing
in registered tournaments.
The number of fencers
recognized as Point
Champions is based on the
number of participants in
the Weapon during the
fencing year. Fencers must
fence in at least two
competitions in the weapon
to qualify. Our 2008-2009
Points Champions are:

READING THE RESULTS |
Make Sense of Rankings
For each tournament we post on
the website a table that shows
how the rankings changed during
the competition (access it
through the
Competitions page). Our
ranking system is based on the
model that every bout is a
competition between two
fencers. Every fencer starts in
our system with a score of 700.
When a fencer wins a bout
against a stronger opponent they
earn more points than when they
win against a lower
ranked opponent. And when a
fencer loses to a stronger
opponent they lose fewer points
than if the lose to a lower
ranked opponent.
Throughout a tournament rankings
change constantly. Although
this is a complicated book
keeping problem for us, for the
meet organizer it means that as
fencers fence in more events,
the quality of the rankings
constantly improve. That makes
them more valuable for initial
seeding, the process by which
fencers are assigned to pools
and to positions within pools.
Because these rankings are
career rankings, they tend to
dampen out the bad day at one
end and the day you were on fire
at the other, providing a
consistent picture of fencer
performance potential.
